Quick answer: A university packing list falls into five groups: documents, room items, clothes, study gear and health. Male and female students have a few differences in clothing and personal items. Check the official list in your offer letter and your residential college rules before buying.
Your offer letter has arrived. Now it is time to get ready for registration day. The university packing list below can be printed or saved on your phone, then ticked off item by item as you pack.
For more detail on each category and the appliance rules, read our main guide to university hostel essentials.

University packing list for guys and girls
Besides the basics, some items depend on personal needs. Bring just enough, because wardrobe space in residential colleges is usually small.
University packing list for guys
- Shirts, slacks and leather shoes for lectures
- Baju Melayu or formal wear for official events
- Kain pelikat and kopiah
- Razor and shaving cream
- Sportswear and sports shoes
- Deodorant and hair products
University packing list for girls
- Baju kurung or formal wear for lectures
- Enough tudung, inner scarves and pins

Also check your university dress code. Some universities set specific attire for lectures and official events, so refer to the student handbook.
Items to check with your college
Electrical appliances are the items most often confiscated. For example, the Kolej Cempaka UNIMAS electrical items list allows kettles up to 2.0 litres, irons and table fans. However, rice cookers, stoves, microwaves, fridges, hair dryers and immersion heater coils are banned.
At UKM, the UKM Residential College Regulations 2026 ban cooking in rooms and owning electrical items without permission. Items that are not allowed can be confiscated.
Some colleges also ask students to register their appliances. For example, the UPNM residential college guidelines allow an electric kettle once registered, at RM10 per semester. So keep the kettle receipt and box until registration of the appliance is done.
Food stock for the first week
The first week is usually packed with orientation activities. You may get back to your room late, after the cafe has closed. So bring some food that lasts and needs no cooking.
Think biscuits, instant oats, dates, UHT milk and ready dishes in retort pouches. Retort dishes need no fridge and last 1 to 2 years before opening. Eat straight from the pack, or soak the pouch in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes if your college allows a kettle. More ideas are in our guides to student meal ideas and ready to eat food.
MakanHubb sells ready dishes and white rice in retort pouches, from RM17.90 a pack.
Prep timeline before registration
Do not wait until the last night to pack. Split the work into stages so it feels less stressful.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Once the offer letter arrives | Read the registration requirements, dress code and residential college rules |
| Two weeks before | Prepare documents, copies and photos; buy bedsheets and any missing clothes |
| One week before | Check medicine, study gear and dry food stock |
| Two days before | Pack bags by category and tick off the list |
| Morning of registration | Check the document file, phone, charger and wallet |
Also plan the trip to campus. Registration areas are usually crowded, so leave early and bring drinking water and some food for the car. If you are taking a bus or flight, pack less and buy the rest near campus.
Finally, save the phone numbers of the residential college office and your roommate, if you already know them. This helps if you are running late or need to ask something.
Packing tips for registration day
- Keep documents separate: Put the document file in your backpack, not in the big luggage.
- Use vacuum bags: Blankets and thick clothes get flatter and easier to carry.
- Label your bags: Write your name and phone number on every bag.
- Bring a small trolley: Your room might be on an upper floor with no lift.

FAQ about the university packing list
Where can I get the official list?
The official list usually comes with your offer letter or sits in the university’s new student portal. Use that list as your main reference.
Do I need to buy everything before registering?
No. Buy documents, clothes and bedsheets first. Other items can wait until you have seen the room and asked senior students.
Can I bring a rice cooker?
Many colleges ban it. For example, Kolej Cempaka UNIMAS bans rice cookers of all sizes, and UKM bans cooking in rooms. Check your college rules.
How many clothes should I bring?
Clothes for a week are enough, since you can do laundry at the college. Add one or two formal outfits for official events.
What food is good to bring?
Pick food that lasts and needs no fridge, such as biscuits, dates and sealed retort dishes.
