Quick answer: How many days for umrah depends on the package you choose. The packages Malaysian agencies offer most often run about 9 to 14 days, including flight days. The real length changes with the split between Makkah and Madinah, the ziarah programme, the flight route and the season. Check the full itinerary with a licensed agency before you pay.
Trip length is one of the first things people ask about when planning a journey to the Holy Land, especially if you need to apply for leave or are bringing elderly parents. This guide explains the package lengths you usually see on the market, what makes a package longer or shorter, and how to pick a length that suits your situation. We also include a note on food during the trip.

How many days for umrah: the big picture
The umrah rites themselves do not take days to complete. Most days in a package go to worship at Masjidil Haram and Masjid Nabawi, ziarah visits, rest, and travel between cities and airports. That is why two packages at almost the same price can have very different lengths.
When comparing packages, count the flight days too. A 12 day package, for example, may only give you about 10 full days in the Holy Land once departure and return days are taken out.
Typical umrah package lengths
These are general observations from packages on the Malaysian market, not official rules:
| Package type | Usual length | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Short | Under 9 days | People with limited leave who have been before |
| Medium | About 9 to 14 days | Most first timers and families |
| Long | More than 14 days | Older pilgrims, or those who want more time for worship |
Short packages
Short packages save leave, but the schedule is tight. There may be little rest after a long flight, and ziarah is usually cut down. They suit people who are healthy and already know the journey.
How many days for umrah in the most popular packages
Packages of about 9 to 14 days are the ones you see most in agency adverts. This length gives comfortable time in Makkah and Madinah, room for ziarah, and still fits a two week leave application.
Long packages
Longer packages give a more relaxed schedule. They suit older pilgrims who need rest days, or anyone who wants more time for worship. The cost is usually higher because of the extra hotel nights.

What decides how many days for umrah
The Makkah and Madinah split
Almost every package combines Makkah and Madinah. Some start in Madinah, others in Makkah. Ask the agency how many nights you get in each city, because that tells you more than the total number of days.
Ziarah programme
Ziarah visits to historical sites around Makkah and Madinah usually take half a day or a full day each. Packages with more ziarah, or visits to other cities, will be longer.
Flights and transit
Direct flights to Jeddah or Madinah save time. Flights with a transit can add half a day or more each way, and are more tiring for older pilgrims.
Season, leave and visas
School holidays and Ramadan are usually busier and more expensive, so some families pick a shorter package. Umrah visa rules have also changed from time to time. Official bookings and information are on the Nusuk platform, and your licensed agency should tell you the current visa conditions.
How many days for umrah suits you
Start with three questions: how much leave you have, who is coming, and how much rest you need. Young, healthy pilgrims may be comfortable with a medium package. Families with small children or elderly parents are often calmer with a schedule that is not too packed.
Older pilgrims and children
Walking long distances in the heat and crowds is tiring. For older pilgrims, pick a hotel close to the mosque and a package with a rest day after arrival. For children, a looser schedule lowers the chance of them falling sick.
Food during your umrah trip
Most packages include meals at the hotel, but some times are not covered, such as late nights after worship, flight days, or long ziarah days. Many pilgrims also miss Malaysian flavours after a few days.
For food brought in from abroad, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) guidance for pilgrims says food must be labelled, carry an expiry date, be kept in proper food packaging, and not be brought in commercial quantities. Food containing alcohol or pork fat is not allowed. The document sets no weight limit, so bring personal quantities only and check with your agency if unsure.
Meat dishes, including retort dishes in pouches, are not recommended for Saudi Arabia because the SFDA prohibited list also names meat products. If you want a small back-up, choose meat-free items such as packed white rice and put them in checked luggage, not your cabin bag, because each pouch is over 100 ml. The full explanation is in our guide on bringing food to Saudi Arabia. See also our guides on food on a plane and travel food.
Tips for planning your umrah length
- Compare the number of nights in Makkah and Madinah, not just the total package days.
- Ask whether flight days are counted in the package length.
- For older pilgrims, ask for at least one rest day after arrival.
- Choose a licensed agency and keep a copy of the itinerary.
- Check health requirements, including the umrah vaccine, a few weeks before departure.

FAQ about how many days for umrah
What package length suits a first timer?
Many first timers choose a package of about 9 to 14 days because it gives enough time in Makkah and Madinah without a packed schedule. Choose based on your leave and health.
Can I do umrah in one week?
Short packages exist. They are tighter and usually have less ziarah, so they suit people who are healthy and have been before.
How many nights in Makkah and how many in Madinah?
It differs by package. Ask your agency for the night split in each city before you pay.
Are flight days included in the package length?
Usually yes. So a 12 day package may give only about 10 full days in the Holy Land.
Who should I ask about how to perform the rites?
Refer to your agency’s umrah course, your mutawwif, or official sources such as Lembaga Tabung Haji and JAKIM.
