Umrah Packing List: Complete Checklist for Men and Women

An umrah packing list grouped by category, with separate lists for men and women and tips for packing your bags.

Quick answer: A good umrah packing list covers travel documents, worship clothes and light everyday clothes, comfortable slippers for long walks, personal medicine, toiletries, a small sling bag, your phone and powerbank, and cash. Men and women need different clothes, so use the separate lists below and check them against the list your agency gives you.

Packing for umrah is not the same as packing for a holiday. You will walk a lot, Makkah is hot, and large bags are not allowed into Masjidil Haram and Masjid Nabawi. This umrah packing list is grouped by category so you can tick items off one by one before you fly.

This list covers practical items only. For clothing during ihram and matters of worship, follow what is taught in your licensed agency’s umrah course and ask your mutawwif. Official guidance is also available on the Lembaga Tabung Haji website.

Documents and money

  • A valid passport, plus photocopies and digital copies
  • The visa or travel documents given by your agency
  • Flight tickets and itinerary
  • Your meningococcal vaccination record and other health documents
  • A doctor’s letter and prescription for regular medication
  • Your MyKad
  • Saudi riyal in small notes, and a debit or credit card
  • Phone numbers for your agency, mutawwif and next of kin in Malaysia

Vaccine requirements are explained in our umrah vaccine guide. The official reference is the umrah health requirements document from the Saudi Ministry of Health. Check the latest requirements with a licensed agency or clinic.

Umrah packing list for men and women

Clothing is where men’s and women’s lists differ most. Choose light, loose cotton because of the heat, and bring only enough clothes. Most hotels have a laundry service.

Umrah packing list for men

  • Ihram cloth. Do not rely on one set only, bring a spare
  • An ihram belt or waist pouch for money and phone
  • Jubah or baju Melayu and loose trousers for regular days
  • Kopiah and serban if you usually wear them
  • Enough undershirts and underwear
  • Light slippers or sandals suitable for long walks
  • Safety pins or cloth clips
  • A razor or small scissors, packed in checked luggage

Umrah packing list for women

  • Telekung, at least two sets so you can switch while one is washed
  • Loose jubah or baju kurung in soft colours
  • Several tudung that absorb sweat
  • Anak tudung and arm sleeves
  • Several pairs of socks
  • Enough underwear
  • Pads or sanitary towels, because the brand you usually use may be hard to find
  • Comfortable light slippers or sandals
  • A small handbag or crossbody bag

Questions about what women wear during ihram are best asked directly to your mutawwif, because they are about religious rulings and not just packing.

Health and hygiene items

  • Regular medication for the whole trip plus a few extra days, in original packaging
  • Medicine for fever, colds, cough, stomach ache and diarrhoea
  • Oral rehydration salts (ORS)
  • Face masks, because the mosque areas are very crowded
  • Cream for blisters and plasters
  • Lip balm and lotion, because the air is dry
  • Soap, shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste. Ask your mutawwif if you need unscented types
  • A small towel and wet wipes
  • A refillable water bottle

Electronics and small items

  • Phone, charger and powerbank
  • Plug adapter for Saudi sockets
  • A small sling bag to take to the mosque
  • A shoe bag or small cloth bag to hold your slippers at the mosque
  • A small umbrella or cap for the heat
  • Sunglasses
  • A small padlock for your luggage

Food on your umrah packing list

Many umrah packages include meals at the hotel, and there are plenty of places to eat around both mosques. So food is not a must-have on your umrah packing list.

If you want a small back-up, remember that SFDA guidelines only allow labelled food with an expiry date for personal use, and the prohibited list also names homemade food and meat products. So leave meat dishes, rendang and serunding at home. The full explanation is in our guide on bringing food to Saudi Arabia.

MakanHubb White Rice is a light meat-free option. One 200 g pouch needs no fridge and can be warmed by soaking it in hot water from the hotel. Pack it in checked luggage because it is over 100 ml. Meat dishes are better kept as stock at home for the day you return. Prices from RM12.90 a pack.

What not to bring

  • A large bag for the mosque. Large bags are not allowed into Masjidil Haram and Masjid Nabawi
  • Too many clothes. Most hotels have laundry
  • Expensive jewellery
  • Food that smells strong, spoils quickly or has no label
  • Sharp objects in your cabin bag
  • Zamzam water in your luggage on the way home. Follow the arrangement made by your agency or airline

Tips for packing your umrah packing list items

  1. Follow the baggage limit. Check the weight limit with your agency, and leave space for things you buy there.
  2. Cabin bag for essentials. Documents, medicine, phone, one set of clothes and your ihram cloth or telekung should be in your cabin bag in case checked luggage is delayed.
  3. Label your bags. Use the tag or ribbon from your agency so bags are easy to spot.
  4. Pack by day. Roll clothes and put them in small pouches by day or by type.
  5. Weigh before going to KLIA. It is easier to remove things at home than at the counter.

FAQ about the umrah packing list

How many sets of ihram cloth should I bring?

Bring more than one set so you have a spare if one gets dirty or wet. The Tabung Haji guide also advises pilgrims not to rely on just one set.

What do women often forget to pack for umrah?

Extra socks, anak tudung, pads or sanitary towels, lip balm and a small bag for slippers. Check this list the day before you fly.

Should I bring slippers or shoes?

Light slippers or sandals that are comfortable for long walks are more practical because you take them off at the mosque door. Wear them for a few weeks before you fly so your feet get used to them.

Can I add meat dishes to my umrah packing list?

Meat dishes are not advisable because meat products are named in the SFDA prohibited list. A small labelled meat-free back-up is safer. Ask your agency first.

What should go in my cabin bag?

Passport, documents, medicine, phone, charger, a spare set of clothes, and your ihram cloth or telekung. Liquids over 100 ml must go in checked luggage.
