Sea Fishing Checklist: Everything to Pack Before You Head Out

A complete sea fishing checklist: gear, safety items, food, rules and weather to check before a trip.

By the MakanHubb teamUpdated 6 min read

Quick answer: A good sea fishing checklist covers a suitable rod and reel, line, hooks, sinkers, bait, a life jacket, sun protection, a raincoat, seasickness medicine, enough drinking water and food that needs no fridge. Check the marine weather and make sure you board a licensed boat.

A fishing trip at sea needs more careful preparation than fishing by a river. Once the boat leaves, you cannot turn back for something you forgot. This guide lists the gear, safety items and food to bring, plus the rules and weather to consider. It suits first-timers as well as regular anglers.

Basic sea fishing checklist

Gear depends on your technique, whether bottom fishing, apollo rigs or jigging. Still, you will need the items below on most trips.

Rod, reel and line

Choose a rod and reel that match the type of fish and water depth. Bring at least one spare set on a long trip. Main line and leader should come in a few sizes, as conditions at sea can change.

Hooks, sinkers and bait

Pack hooks in different sizes and sinkers of different weights for strong and weak currents. Live or dead bait can be bought at the jetty, but ask the skipper (tekong) first which bait suits that spot.

Handy tools

Pliers, a small knife, line cutters and gloves make work on the boat easier. Bring a small tackle box so accessories do not scatter when the boat rocks.

Safety items on your sea fishing checklist

Fishing gear can be borrowed or rented, but safety items are not negotiable. The open sea is different from a lake, and conditions can change quickly.

Life jacket

Wear a life jacket the whole time you are on the boat, not only in bad weather. According to a Utusan Malaysia report, boats carrying anglers must follow life jacket guidelines and limits on the number of anglers. If you own a comfortable life jacket, bring it.

Sun and rain protection

At sea there is no shade apart from the boat’s small roof. Bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and a thin long-sleeved shirt. A raincoat is also needed because rain at sea often comes without warning.

Seasickness medicine and first aid

Many new anglers get seasick. Ask a pharmacist about suitable medicine and when to take it before the trip. Also bring plasters, antiseptic and personal medication, since cuts from hooks or fish fins are common.

Food on your sea fishing checklist

A sea fishing trip can run from dawn to late afternoon, or even overnight. Most small boats have no fridge for food and space is tight. So choose food that handles heat, does not spill easily and is simple to eat.

  • Enough drinking water. Hot weather and sea wind quickly lead to dehydration.
  • Snacks. Bread, biscuits and dates are easy to eat while waiting for a bite.
  • Dishes in retort pouches. No fridge needed, and you can eat straight from the pack.

MakanHubb retort dishes last 1 to 2 years before opening. If the boat has a small stove, warm the pouch in hot water for a few minutes. If not, eat straight from the pack. Kaki Ayam Berapi is fairly spicy, so it suits those who like heat. For other options, read our guides to long lasting food and ready to eat food.

Prices start from RM12.90 a pack. See the full menu in the MakanHubb shop.

Rules you should know

Sea fishing rules involve several agencies. The points below are what we could confirm. Check again with the relevant agency before your trip, as rules can change.

Recreational angler registration

The Department of Fisheries Malaysia (Jabatan Perikanan) offers recreational fishing registration to all anglers fishing at sea or on the coast through the e-Rekreasi app. The official page does not state fees or validity, so contact the department for current details.

Licensed boats and certified skippers

The Department of Fisheries e-Rekreasi portal states that vessels carrying passengers for recreational sea fishing need a permission letter from the Marine Department Malaysia (Jabatan Laut). The Utusan Malaysia report also says skippers must hold a competency certificate. Before paying, ask the boat operator about their licence, permission and insurance.

Marine park areas

Fishing inside a gazetted marine park is an offence. Utusan Malaysia reported a case of anglers detained near Pulau Aur under Section 43 of the Fisheries Act 1985. Make sure your skipper knows the marine park boundaries in the area.

Check the weather before your sea fishing checklist

On the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the Northeast Monsoon usually runs from November to March. According to MetMalaysia, the heaviest rain in the east coast states falls in November, December and January. In this season, rough seas lead to many trips being cancelled.

Check the marine weather forecast on the MetMalaysia site a few days before the trip, and again on the morning you leave. If the skipper cancels because of the weather, accept it. Safety matters more than your catch.

Preparing the day before

Most sea fishing trips start early in the morning, so pack the night before. Check your reels, replace worn line and make sure hooks are not rusty. Charge your phone and power bank fully.

Also confirm the time and jetty location with the skipper. Ask whether bait, ice and drinking water are provided, or whether you need to bring your own. That way, you avoid doubling up and your bag stays lighter.

Finally, tell family or friends the jetty location, boat name and expected return time. This small step makes it easier to get help if something goes wrong at sea.

Leave no rubbish at sea

Food packs, plastic bottles and fishing line thrown into the sea harm marine life. Bring your own rubbish bag and take every empty pouch back to shore. Broken line and hooks should also be kept, not thrown into the water.

The Department of Fisheries also encourages catch and release for fish you do not need. Release small fish quickly so they have a chance to survive.
